"Unrestrained" is the first-ever Arabic translation of this magnitude of Gabriel García Márquez's journalistic works. Its importance lies not only in it being the first of its kind in Arabic but also in revealing Gabriel García Márquez's talent as a first-rate journalist before becoming a great novelist. This book includes a collection of Márquez's articles published in newspapers and magazines between 1974 and 1995. They embody the fusion of his distinctive narrative style with his brilliant documentation of many historical and political events that swept Latin America and the world in the last quarter of the twentieth century. Examples include: the Cuban revolution and its intervention in Angola, Che Guevara's role in Africa, the popular revolution in Venezuela, the Carnation Revolution in Portugal, the liquidation of journalists like Rodolfo Walsh by government followers in Argentina, and the involvement of major literary figures like Jorge Luis Borges in supporting military dictatorships in Latin America, among other outstanding press coverages by García Márquez of many political events and important figures. Perhaps the most prominent of all is his narration of the behind-the-scenes conspiracy between the United States and some Chilean army officers to overthrow President Allende. He says: "When they were about to have dessert after dinner, a Pentagon general inquired about the Chilean army's plan if the leftist candidate, Salvador Allende, were to win the election. General Mathuti replied: 'If that happens, we will seize the 'La Moneda' presidential palace in half an hour, even if we have to burn it down...' That historic dinner was the first contact between the Pentagon and representatives of the four branches of the Chilean military. During subsequent meetings, held in both Washington and Chile, it was agreed to promote the generals most aligned with U.S. interests to the helm of power should the Popular Unity party win the elections."
